Visiting Tunkhannock, PA

Tunkhannock surprised me in the best possible way. It offered a great balance of adventures to explore and quiet.. This trip with my husband’s college friends (plus spouses, kids, and all the delightful chaos that comes a gathering of 15+ people) hit that perfect balance of relaxing, laughing, exploring, and just being together.
We picked Tunkhannock simply because it was “in the middle” for everyone. No expectations, no must‑see list, no pressure. And honestly? That made the adventure and camaraderie more powerful.
The rental house came with a gorgeous view and a hot tub — two things that shift a trip to a vacation for me. It wasn’t perfect, but I’d stay there again. This group doesn’t need elaborate; give us a big table for board games, comfy chairs, and good conversation, and we’re set. I also carved out some quiet time to read, think, and breathe. The room that we called the “fish bowl” delivered exactly what I needed.
Here’s a look at our Tunkhannock adventure:
Our first meal set the tone. I don’t usually eat pork, but this splurge was absolutely worth it. In addition to the fantastic pulled pork, I loved the salty potatoes, mac and cheese and cole slaw were exceptional.
A Scranton Day Trip
The nerd in me needed a pilgrimage to The Office filming spots. Lunch at Cooper’s Seafood was a highlight with quirky décor, great food, and a local beer from Cooper’s Brewery that hit the spot. Really, the food was excellent! The mural was my favorite stop.
A surprise find after our arrival that was definitely one of the highlights for me! It was well-designed with lots of easy to explore exhibit. I loved that they opened the engine of Big Boy for tours with someone telling us more from the engineers seat. Such a fun adventure! Best of all - there is no entrance fee.
Tubing on the Susquehanna
Simple joy with a slow float.
A peaceful little gem. I wandered through plants, found a few treasures to take home, and learned they host live music and food trucks on some Fridays. Charming is the right word.
Beautifully designed, well cared for, and unexpectedly competitive. I will not reveal who won.
A relaxed stop with good wine, good beer, and good company.
Thrift Store Adventures
Karen’s, Salvation Army, and Interfaith Friends. Karen’s leaned pricey and kid‑focused, but the other two? Thrifting gold.
We grabbed pizza expecting “fine.” We got “this is actually really good.”
Tip: Bring Cash
A surprising number of local spots — including Greenley’s BBQ and Pompeii’s Pizza — were cash‑only. Plan ahead so you don’t have to hunt for an ATM.
Surprises
One of my favorite travel quirks is visiting local grocery stores. There’s something oddly delightful about seeing different brands, regional snacks, and the everyday things people buy. Weis was a fun little immersion into the area’s personality. And yes, I also popped into Dollar Tree and Aldi simply because I could.
Tunkhannock wasn’t a bucket‑list destination, but it turned into a weekend full of small joys, good food, peaceful moments, and the kind of memories that stick. Sometimes the best adventures are the ones you never planned.
